The Process of Regeneration is the first course in our professional curriculum and a prerequisite
for many of our advanced credential courses.
This is the ideal place to start your journey into learning sustainable design practice. Join us as we explore a transformative approach to designing systems that are an integrated and regenerative part of the Earth’s biosphere.
Why do we have so many brilliant people designing the technologies that power our modern life and yet end up with most of these technologies ultimately being destructive to our living world?
The engineers, architects, and other professionals who have designed the technological foundations of our civilization have, to a great extent, drawn on models and patterns originally developed in the natural sciences. But the reductionist approach that has until recently dominated much of modern science has also helped drive the adoption of reductionist thinking in many fields of applied design.
The result is that professionals are trained in narrow fields of specialty and then set to work trying to solve their small piece of a large design puzzle, often with limited interaction with those designing the other pieces. Deep compatibility with Earth’s ecosystems, and even with human health, is often not a primary consideration. The resulting designs often make sense at the subsystem level, but lack the whole-systems dynamics required to create regenerative outcomes that are ecosystemic and biocompatible.
The Integrated Regenerative Design approach provides the complete framework needed for transdisciplinary teams to create systems that are deeply regenerative, using resources without creating waste while using only the energy available to them directly from the surrounding environment.
This course will help you begin your journey into creating designs that act like ecosystems, designs that are both regenerative and profitable while being deeply compatible with Earth’s living processes.

Understand Regenerative Design Foundations
Learn the core principles behind regenerative design and how it differs from conventional sustainable and technical design approaches. Build a foundational understanding of design as part of Earth’s living systems.

Meet Your Teachers
Alan Booker, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP, LFA
Alan is the founder and executive director of the Institute of Integrated Regenerative Design, the creator of the Integrated Regenerative Design Framework, and the lead author of the Biocompatible Design Standard. He has over three decades of experience in systems engineering and sustainable design, consulting on large-scale regenerative design projects world-wide.

Learners who successfully complete Introductory courses will earn a Certificate, which is awarded as a digital badge that can be shared on platforms such as LinkedIn. Certificates and their associated digital badges do not expire.
